Postnatal Essentials
Your well-being checklist for the first few weeks after giving birth
What you really need for yourself and your body right now
Congratulations, you have achieved something truly remarkable. ❤️
The early days with your baby, known as the postnatal period, are a very special time for getting to know each other, enjoying close moments and, most importantly, allowing your body to heal. Your body has accomplished something incredible and now deserves the very best support.
Many mums carefully prepare their baby’s layette, but often overlook their own needs in the process. To help you focus fully on your baby, we have put together a list of essentials to make daily life easier and support your wellbeing.
Gentle care for your intimate area
Whether you have had a natural birth or a caesarean section, your intimate area now needs extra care and gentleness.
- Intimate wash (bottoms wash): A real help in the early days. As toilet paper can feel uncomfortable after giving birth, lukewarm water from an intimate wash allows for gentle and hygienic cleansing.
- Postnatal pads & mesh briefs: In the first few days, postnatal discharge is heavy. Extra soft pads without a plastic layer for better breathability, combined with stretchy mesh briefs, ensure a comfortable and secure fit.
- Caesarean section underwear: For mums who have had a caesarean section, special briefs with a very high waistband prevent pressure on the healing scar.
- Cooling pads for the intimate area: These pads can help reduce swelling and soothe a burning sensation. They provide gentle cooling and support the healing process.
- Regenerating spray & hay flower sitz bath: An organic regenerating spray with ingredients such as witch hazel helps to soothe the skin. A hay flower sitz bath is a traditional remedy that softens the tissue and supports recovery.
Everything you need for a relaxed breastfeeding period
Your breasts are also working very hard at this time. With the right products, you can help prevent irritation before it develops.
- Nipple cream (lanolin): High-purity wool fat protects sensitive nipples and does not need to be removed before breastfeeding.
- Breast compresses: They cool, moisturise and can help with early signs of irritation.
- Breast pads: Whether made from organic cotton or as disposable options, they help keep your clothes dry when your milk comes in.
- Breastfeeding shields: In the early stages, both mother and baby may benefit from a little support if latching on is still difficult.
- Breastfeeding pillow: It supports your baby during feeding and can also be used to support your back or legs while resting.
Energy and strength from within
During the postnatal period, you should not have to worry about cooking. Your body needs energy to produce milk and repair tissue.
- Snacks (energy balls): Small nutrient-rich snacks made from dates, nuts and oats are ideal between meals, especially during night feeds.
- Warming, nourishing soups: Pre-prepped chicken or vegetable soup helps to warm you from within and replenish fluids.
- Breastfeeding tea: High-quality blends of fennel, aniseed and caraway can support milk production and may also benefit your baby. The gentle herbal compounds pass into breast milk and can help soothe your baby’s developing digestive system and ease minor wind.
Frequently asked questions about the postnatal period
How long does the postnatal period last?
The traditional postnatal period lasts around six to eight weeks. During this time, the uterus returns to its normal size, the placental wound heals, and hormone levels stabilise. If possible, you should spend the first two weeks, known as the early postnatal period, mostly resting in bed or on the sofa. Giving yourself this time to rest can support a smoother recovery.
When can I have a bath again after giving birth?
In the past, it was recommended to wait until postnatal bleeding had stopped. Today, experts agree that once any wounds have healed well and you feel ready, you can take a short bath that is not too hot. A sitz bath with hay flowers can be particularly beneficial for healing. It is best to avoid foaming or heavily perfumed bath products that may disrupt the natural balance of your intimate area.
What can I do if my nipples are sore at first?
Some initial discomfort in the first few days is common, as the skin adjusts. If the pain continues, it is often linked to latching technique. Lanolin ointment and cooling compresses can provide relief. It is advisable to seek guidance from your midwife or a breastfeeding counsellor, as small adjustments in positioning can make a significant difference.
Why are energy balls so useful during the postnatal period?
Your calorie needs are higher due to breastfeeding and recovery. At the same time, it can be difficult to find time for full meals. Energy balls provide healthy fats and complex carbohydrates that help maintain stable blood sugar levels. They are a practical option when you need a quick snack while your baby is resting on you.
Is there anything special to consider after a caesarean section?
Yes, additional attention should be given to scar care. Special underwear helps protect the area from friction. Once the wound has healed and with guidance from your midwife, you can begin gentle scar massage. It is important to avoid heavy lifting in the early weeks, with your baby being the only weight you should carry.
When can we have sex again after the birth, and what should we consider?
There are no fixed rules, as your physical and emotional wellbeing should guide your decision. From a medical perspective, it is often recommended to wait until postnatal bleeding has stopped, usually after around six weeks, to reduce the risk of infection. If you choose to have sex earlier, using condoms is advisable. It is also normal to experience dryness due to breastfeeding hormones or a reduced interest in intimacy. Take your time, communicate openly and be patient with one another. As ovulation can occur before your first period, it is important to consider contraception if you are not planning another pregnancy.
