Preparing Your Hospital Bag in Advance
Our checklist for expectant mothers
The birth is getting closer, and suddenly the question arises: what do I need to pack in my hospital bag? Many expectant mothers feel unsure because every list looks different. As a mother and a children’s health coach, I know that while there are small differences, the essentials are largely the same everywhere.
Here is a practical checklist to help put your mind at ease, along with tips for a calm start to the postnatal period.
What should go in your hospital bag?
Your hospital bag should be packed by the 36th week of pregnancy at the latest. This way, you can remain relaxed if your baby arrives earlier than expected.
For you as a mother
- Comfortable clothing (nursing bras, nightdresses, loose-fitting tops)
Choose tops and trousers that are comfortable and make breastfeeding easier. Soft cotton works particularly well. - Warm socks and slippers
Essential, especially in cooler hospital environments. It is advisable to pack an extra pair. - Toiletries bag with essentials
Toothbrush, hairbrush, deodorant (preferably natural), and lip balm. Small items can make a significant difference. - Mobile phone and charger
Useful for photos, notes, music, or relaxation playlists. - Snacks and a water bottle
You will need energy for the birth and the first few hours afterwards. - Postnatal pads, mesh knickers, intimate wash, nipple cream
Useful essentials for the first few days after the birth. - Important documents
Maternity notes, insurance card, and birth plan should be kept easily accessible.
For the birth
- Loose-fitting T-shirt or nightdress and socks
Choose something comfortable that you do not mind getting dirty. - Massage oil or a hot water bottle
Can help relieve tension and support relaxation. - Music or playlists
To create a calm and pleasant atmosphere during labour. - Hairband or hair ties
To keep hair away from your face. - Blanket for your newborn
To wrap your baby after the birth.
For your baby
- Rompers and bodysuits (size 50/56)
Practical and comfortable for the first few days. - Hats and socks
Help keep your baby warm, especially in hospital. - Blanket or swaddle
For the journey home and the first cosy moments. - Nappies and wet wipes
Some hospitals provide these, while others do not, so it is worth checking in advance. - Car seat for the journey home
Ensures your baby travels safely.
Tip: Contact your maternity hospital to find out what is provided. This helps you avoid packing unnecessary items.
Frequently asked questions about the hospital bag
When should I pack my hospital bag?
Ideally between the 34th and 36th week of pregnancy. This ensures you are prepared if your baby arrives early.
How large should the hospital bag be?
A medium-sized travel bag is usually sufficient. Pack lightly, as your partner or family members can bring additional items later if needed.
Do I need a breastfeeding pillow in hospital?
Not necessarily. Many hospitals provide nursing pillows, but you may bring your own if you prefer.
What should my baby wear for the journey home?
In summer: a light romper with a blanket.
In winter: a warm snowsuit, hat, and blanket.
Important: Avoid thick snowsuits in the car seat.
Bulky clothing prevents the harness from fitting snugly against the body. In the event of a collision, air can be compressed out of the fabric, allowing the harness to loosen and reducing its effectiveness in securing your baby.
